DIY Curry Powder

DIY Curry Powder featuring Spade & Clover turmeric

I promise that after making this super easy curry powder you will never go back to the mysterious one on the grocery shelf that's been there how long??

Before I took the time to make my own curry powder I seriously only thought to add it to very specific dishes. That generic grocery store blend is just a bit overwhelming! That's not the case when you grind some of your own spices and create a fresh and balanced elixir that adds magic to so many dishes -- from grilled meats and fish to braised beans. If I can ever get my act together to include more recipes on the blog you will see it popping up in many of my favorite dishes!

P.S. That little jar in my photo is one of the many reasons we are lucky to live in Charleston -- Spade & Clover Farms grows their own turmeric and creates their own dried turmeric powder -- perhaps that's what sets this curry powder apart! Look for them at several local farmers markets.

Sarah’s DIY Curry Powder

¼ cup coriander seeds

1 tablespoon cumin seeds

1 teaspoon fennel seeds

2 teaspoons ground turmeric

1 teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 teaspoon ground ginger

¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground allspice

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (freshly grated if possible!)

Toast first three ingredients in a small skillet over medium low heat until fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes (careful not to burn)! Allow to cool and then grind in a spice grinder (or clean coffee grinder). Combine with other ingredients and store in an airtight container.

Yield: About ¾ cup
